Lum – Lower Dzongu

Lum – Lower Dzongu is a tiny pristine village located on the southern periphery of Lower Dzongu region in North Sikkim. At a distance of around 50 kms from the town of Gangtok and 35 kms from the town of Singtam, secluded from the modern buzz, the village of Lum nestles peacefully, amidst the lush greenery of forests. As the whole region of Dzongu is a declared reserve of the Lepchas, Also, Lum – Lower Dzongu too is inhabited only by the Lepchas.

The sparsely populated village features organic farms, traditional huts, Orange orchards, a community monastery and a stunning waterfall, every place and thing offering a story of its own. Due to its location and seclusion from the mainland, the place is relatively lesser known than the other places in North Sikkim. The place has motor-able road that crosses over the top of Teesta river dam and connects the village to the national highway. Monsoon, will be the season of threats of landslide. Renowned for spectacular Rural Tourism and the local lifestyle, Lum is a place to visit.

Experience Organic Food And Drinks.

Inhabitants of the village lead a self-sustained lifestyle like most of other Sikkimese do. They cultivate their own food using organic manure and live stocks are grass-fed. Local people in Lum, produces oranges on a large scale. Chee (made from fermenting millets) and Aarack (made from Cinnamon plant) are the locally brewed liquors and are completely organic.

Experience Local (Lepcha) Culture And Tradition

Considering the Folklore and lepcha teachings, Dzongu holds a big significance to the Lepchas of Sikkim. With each place that has its own story attached to it. The village has some ancient traditional houses that makes the place ideal for experiencing the culture and tradition.

Trek To Lingtyang From Lum – Lower Dzongu

Lingtyang is one of the remotest villages of Lower Dzongu in North Sikkim. Inhabitaed by small group of Lepcha people, the village has an old monastery (Nyingmapa Manilakhang). The trails offer spectacular view of the surroundings and various species of birds.

Sungdong Kung Viewpoint

It is an hour-long trek from the village. The viewpoint offers striking view of the waterfall above, the village of Lum below and mountains and Settlements of the places around.

Nearest railway station: NJP railway station

Nearest Airport: Bagdogra Airport

One can take a shared cab or hire one from NJP or Bagdogra to Gangtok or Singtam (at one’s convenience). Number of local shared taxies or will be available to take from Singtam or Gangtok to Dikchu. And from Dikchu one has to Hire a local taxi to get to Lum – Lower Dzongu (will cost around 400/- Rs from Dikchu).

The experience of coming close with the nature and wilderness, breathing in the pure oxygen, living with the generous, peaceful and warm locals wholly magical and intense.
