The unexplored : Hangu Lake, East Sikkim

Located at Sherathang, East Sikkim, and spread across a kilometer, The unexplored : Hangu lake at 13000 ft is one among few lakes that lie between Tsongmo (Changu) Lake and Old Baba Mandir. It surely is one of the most beautiful lakes of East Sikkim. The serene lake of Hangu perfectly reflects the surrounding of quiet mountains whose lap it lays in, making it look breathtakingly beautiful. Due to it’s newness and unavailability on google maps, not many people know about this lake. However, the Sikkim Tourism has recently added it in the list of tourist spots and included the place in one day Nathula tour package.

Unlike other natural lakes of East Sikkim, at Hangu Lake, one can experience the serenity and pure beauty of nature by paddle-boating in the lake. The boats can accommodate four people at once. There are few other boats having the capacity of six people and it costs around 200/- Rs per person to boat. With the view of cavern quite barren mountains around (often snow-clad in the winters), clear sky, sound of water coming in contact with the boat, icy breeze blowing across the open space, boating at “The unexplored : Hangu Lake” feels almost surreal.

The experience provides a pure zen moment to the boater. The lake looks much more magnificent in the winters when the lake remains half-frozen.

Hangu lake in all aspects is worth one’s time and money for it provides everything a traveler or a tourist seeks from a place. Peace, serenity, calmness, and pure bliss.
